Next Man Up, but Who Will Be Left?

After the news of losing Gary Brackett and Melvin Bullitt to the injured reserve list hit me, I got to thinking when will this injury bug stop.  I feel like every year the Colts have to go through this.  Right now they've lost the captains of all three areas of the team, offense (Peyton Manning), defense (Gary Brackett), and special teams (Melvin Bullitt).  In Bullitt's case, you have to feel bad because he got the same injury last year that kept him out about the same time as this year.  You don't want to be a strong safety on the Colts, apparently.  Looking into Brackett's case, I think he is the heart and soul of the defense.  Yes Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis get to the quarterback a lot, but I feel like Brackett was there to clean up missed tackles and get the defense set to make a play.  Losing him is a tough loss, but we'll see how Pat Angerer steps in as the old saying "Next Man Up."

Looking into the quarterback situation is a tricky one as well.  Kerry Collins got knocked around Sunday night, and possibly had a concussion, so Curtis Painter came in.  Painter did lead a good drive down the field to tie up the ball game, and if he makes that pass to Pierre Garcon possibly leading a couple of good drives.  So maybe, the time is just to give him the ball.  Right now the Colts are sitting at 0-3, with a couple of winnable games in Kansas City and Cincinnati after the Monday night game against Tampa Bay.  Even the game against Tampa Bay could be winnable depending on what Tampa Bay team shows up.  Just another interesting twist to the quarterback story is that the Colts picked up again Dan Orlovsky, I'm guessing just as an insurance for Painter.  I don't imagine that Orlovsky would come in and get the job over Painter.  I think that would really screw with the players of the Colts.  They seem very supportive of Painter, so maybe when Painter gets the start on Monday night, they will all step up.

I know we saw the defense step up Sunday night, and I hope that they will continue to do that in the next one.  Time for the offense to start clicking together.  Time for special teams to do their job, and stop the returner before Pat McAfee is the last line of defense.  Time for the fans here in town to step up and show that we're not just a fairweather fan town, and we support a football team through everything.  The Colts 12th Man is the next man up.

NFL Week 3 Reactions

Pittsburgh Steelers beat Indianapolis Colts 23-20
This game came down to a field goal, which I think surprised many people.  I thought the Colts had a good chance of winning if the Steelers played sloppy, and the defense of the Colts made sure the Steelers played sloppy.  Even getting a touchdown off a fumble recovery.  The Colts still had a shot to win this game after Kerry Collins went out with a concussion, I bet there was a collective groan when Curtis Painter took the field, but he did lead a drive that lead to the Colts tying the game.  And if he completes the pass to Pierre Garcon that would have possibly put the Colts ahead in the game.  So maybe Painter does know this offense better than we think.  He might have to start on Monday night if Collins can't go.  I think the effort was there for the Colts, that defense stepped up its game BIG time, but just didn't have enough offense to take care of the Steelers, and show this season could still be something.  At least the Colts have an extra day to get ready for Tampa Bay.

Buffalo Bills beat New England Patriots 34-31
That's right the Bills beat the Patriots. Something they haven't done in the past 15 tries.  The 16th time was a charm for them.  The Bills looked dead in the water in the first half, but pulled close right before halftime, and got to intercept Tom Brady four times.  Brady only threw that many interceptions all year last season.  Maybe this Bills team is for real because right now they sit alone on top of the AFC East.  They got a field goal at the end of this wild game to get the much needed win.

San Francisco 49ers beat Cincinnati Bengals 13-8
An odd score for a football game, but there was only one touchdown scored in this game as Cincinnati had their smallest attendance for a home opener.  So that means hardly anyone was ever there to watch this affair.  Kendall Hunter of the 49ers can get credit for the lone score, and there's not much to say about this game.

Cleveland Browns beat Miami Dolphins 17-16
Colt McCoy had to lead a late drive to get the Browns in position to take this game.  He threw a touchdown pass to Mohamed Massaquoi with 43 seconds to play on an impressive late game drive.  The Dolphins are still winless, and Clevelands goes to 2-1 after three games.

Tennessee Titans beat Denver Broncos 17-14
The Titans get another win, but might have lost Kenny Britt for the season.  He might have suffered some torn ligaments and could be done.  Matt Hasselbeck lead the way for the Titans in throwing over 300 yards and 2 touchdowns.  A week after beating the Ravens the Titans put up another good showing.

Detroit Lions beat Minnesota Vikings 26-23
The Vikings have had a double digit lead in the first half of every game this season, but can't finish the job as they've gone winless in all three.  The Lions were down 20-0 at halftime, but turned around the game, and showed they are a team on the verge of something special this season.

New Orleans Saints beat Houston Texans 40-33
This was a game that you needed to turn on in the fourth quarter as over 30 points total were put up in that quarter alone.  The Saints came alive in the second half and put the pressure to the Texans.  Drew Brees lead the way with 370 yards and 3 touchdown passes.  This was a game I thought the Texans needed to win to show they are a real team this year, but they couldn't close it out.

New York Giants beat Philadelphia Eagles 29-16
Maybe that "Dream Team" title doesn't fit the Eagles.  The Giants put the sleeper hold on the Eagles, and put them to sleep.  There might be some issues that need to get worked out in Philly, but the Giants have been able to overcome some big injuries already in this early part of the season.  The Giants are tied atop the NFC East along with the Cowboys and Redskins as we hit week 4.

Carolina Panther beat Jacksonville Jaguars 16-10
You were lucky to survive this game as monsoon weather hit Jacksonville.  Cam Newton couldn't keep his 400 yard passing game streak alive, but still got the win.  Blaine Gabbert got a rough game to make his first start, but still it looks like the Jags want to get him going now.

Oakland Raiders beat New York Jets 34-24
Darren McFadden ran all over the Jets, and the Raiders get the upset win here.  The Jets get to play the Ravens in Week 4, and could possibly get back to showing why they are expecting big things this season.  The Raiders are 2-1 and might be able to make some noise in the AFC West if the Chargers stumble.

Baltimore Ravens beat St. Louis Rams 37-7
My prediction of the Ravens running all over the Rams came true, and it's looking tough for the Rams to win the division like I've predicted.  Time to turn it around St. Louis!  The Ravens need to keep getting wins like this if they want to be taken serious in the tough AFC North division.  They look like the best team, and just need to nail that home.

San Diego Chargers beat Kansas City Chiefs 20-17
San Diego almost lost this game, and had to stop Matt Cassel towards the end to save the win.  The Chiefs look like such a mess that I think people would have been jumping off the Chargers bandwagon for now.  They are my Super Bowl pick, so I gotta stick with the Chargers until they prove me wrong.  I am glad the Colts play the Chiefs team in a couple of weeks, so they can pick up a win there.

Green Bay Packers beat Chicago Bears 27-17
Aaron Rodgers is putting together a great season throwing for almost 300 yards and 3 touchdowns.  The Packers keep rolling along this season, and are showing that last year wasn't just a fluke Super Bowl team.

Seattle Seahawks beat Arizona Cardinals 13-10
In a battle of birds, the Seahawks get the win.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat Atlanta Falcons 16-13
Looks like Atlanta still can't get going in this season, as they fell to the Bucs.  Tampa Bay was lead by Josh Freeman who got the better off the quarterback battle with Matt Ryan.  There's no denying that these two young guys could be great leaders for their teams.

Dallas Cowboys beat Washington Redskins 18-16
The Cowboys won this game in surprising fashion, hitting six field goals to put out ahead of the Redskins.  Washington won't be able to get to 3-0, but still sit atop of the NFC East.

NFL Week 3 Preview

Houston at New Orleans
Good game for the Texans to show they are for real.  Good game for the Saints to show they are going to be a tough team to contend with in the NFC.  I think I'll go with the Saints because the Colts need a Houston loss. It wouldn't surprise me if the Texans pull this one off though.

NY Giants at Philadelphia
Giants got a good win last week on Monday night that was one of those they really won that game.  The Eagles lost a tough game to the Falcons, and even lost Michael Vick towards the end.  Will be healthy enough to play the full game, if so I'm going with the Eagles to take this one, and get a game up in the division.  The Eagles defense could pull them out of this game if Vick isn't there.  I haven't seen much of the Giants to give me any reason for them to take this game, so Eagles with the win.

Jacksonville at Carolina
Cam Newton over under 400 yards...again....for a third game.  I think the Panthers take this one because it seems like they are making strides toward becoming a better team.  Blaine Gabbert gets to start his time in Jacksonville, and we'll see what kind of quarterback he is.  Maybe he'll get the better of this duel this time. But I'm still going with the Panthers to get their first win of the season.

New England at Buffalo
Who would have thought both teams would be 2-0 going into this game, and some people, like myself, are giving Buffalo a chance?  I mean why not, until they really collapse in a game or show they can't be a good team, I'm going with the Bills in the upset.  Now we'll see where the rest of the season goes, but an upset of the Patriots for the Bills could go a long way.

Miami at Cleveland
I'll go with Cleveland.  They got a good win last week against the Colts, and look to be moving in that right direction.

San Francisco at Cincinnati
Will anyone be watching this game??? I'll go with the Bengals.

Denver at Tennessee
The Titans got a great win last week against the Ravens, so I look for them to keep that going. I don't have much faith in the Broncos right now, so Titans with the win.

Detroit at Minnesota
Detroit will step up and take care of business against the Vikings. I think McNabb will have a tough time against this Lions defense, and wouldn't be surprised with another Lions rout.  They've been rolling through the first two games.

Baltimore at St. Louis
I feel bad for the Rams, tough loss to the Giants on Monday night, and now they have the Ravens coming in after a loss. I think the Ravens come out strong, and roll through the Rams.  St. Louis will still have to look for a win after this week.

NY Jets at Oakland
The Jets made quick work of last week, and I don't see them having any problems with the Raiders, so Jets for the win.

Kansas City at San Diego
San Diego better win this game if they want to show they're a Super Bowl contender like I think they should be.  The Chiefs just look bad, and there's no reason the Chargers won't rout the Chiefs in this game.  Rivers should be able to throw at will and take the win.

Arizona at Seattle
........Cardinals for the win. No other thoughts on this one.  Sorry Arizona and Seattle fans.

Atlanta at Tampa Bay
I think the Falcons get the win, and keep their winning ways going.  They played a strong game last week, and I like them to win again.

Green Bay at Chicago
The long time rivalry of the Bears and Packers.  I like the Packers to take this game, and possibly win in a big time way.

Pittsburgh at Indianapolis
Ahh the Sunday night game, where who knows how many Steeler fans will be there.  They just travel so well, and with the way the Colts have looked, I hope the fans haven't given up their seats.  I'm going with the Colts in a big upset to get their first win in an ugly game.  The way Pittsburgh is up and down, they could have a bad game against the Colts. If the Colts can improve on how they were in the first half last week against the Browns, they should be all right in this game. I hope it's not quite the rout that some people are predicting.

Week 2 NFL Reactions

Cleveland Browns beat Indianapolis Colts 27-19
Things are improving slowly for the Colts.  They still struggled a lot in that third quarter, and I thought I heard at one point, only had one completed pass.  Holding Peyton Hillis under 100 yards is a good sign of improvement on the defense, but the Browns still put up 27 points, and Colt McCoy seemed to throw the ball around whenever he wanted.  More pressure on him and this game could have been different.  The running game of the Colts seemed to come around a bit more too, and that could be something to watch for in the upcoming weeks.  Pittsburgh comes into town next week, and with a win against them, the Colts can get on that winning track.  But got to shape up all the areas of the game, offense, defense, and special teams.  I still want to see after four games how this team looks.

Buffalo Bills beat Oakland Raiders 38-35
Only two games into the season, but the Bills look like a much better team than last year.  They scored on every possession in the second half, and took out the Raiders after being behind for quite a bit of the game.  Ryan Fitzpatrick lead the way for the Bills, and now he gets to face a true test in the Patriots next week.  That should be a good indication of how far this Bills team has come.  Can't see much about the Raiders, they pulled out a win at the end of last week, and lost this game by not holding a big lead.  Maybe they can get back in the winning side next week.

Detroit Lions beat Kansas City Chiefs 48-3
This game showed how quickly a team can change in a season.  The Lions looked great in two weeks now, and Matthew Stafford is still playing. If he can stay healthy and on the field, this Lions team could make some noise this season. He threw for four touchdowns, and led the way for the Lions.  The Chiefs just look bad, and who knows if they can turn it around.  Maybe last year's division title was just a fluke for them since the Chargers couldn't get on the right track in the beginning.  Issues running high in Kansas City, and not sure how they will turn it around.

Tennessee Titans beat Baltimore Ravens 26-13
As good as the Ravens looked last week, I thought they would handle the Titans mightily.  Well, looks like that didn't happen.  Matt Hasselbeck threw for 358 yards and a score in leading the Titans to a home opening win.  The Ravens tried to put men in the box to stop Chris Johnson, but that seemed to backfire as Hasselbeck had a great passing day.  The Ravens should be able to turn things back in their favor next week, and this was a nice win for the Titans.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat Minnesota Vikings 24-20
Hey look Donovan McNabb threw over 39 yards. I knew he had that in him.  The Bucs were down by 17 at halftime, but came back to win the game, and get in the win column.  A tough start for them to this game, but things turned around, and Josh Freeman shows he can bring his team from behind.  8 of his 14 victories have been because of pulling ahead in the fourth quarter.  That's what you want in a quarterback, and looks like the Bucs have found their guy.

New Orleans Saints beat Chicago Bears 30-13
I thought this might be a game the Saints would dominate because of the tough loss at Green Bay, and they did.  Good job on me for calling that one!  The Bears looked good in week one, but didn't seem to show up for this one.  And it looked like Darren Sproles had a good game, why didn't I play him this week in my fantasy league??

New York Jets beat Jacksonsville Jaguars 32-3
What can you say about this game?  The Jets picked off the Jags four times and never looked back after scoring on their first series of the game.  Is it time to put in Blaine Gabbert for the Jaguars?

Pittsburgh Steelers beat Seattle Seahawks 24-0
Another game, where you don't need to say anything after looking at the score.  The Steelers got pounded by the Ravens last week, and ended up taking that aggression on the Seahawks.  Now the Colts get this Steelers team who may be back on track, and that should be a fun time.

Washington Redskins beat Arizona Cardinals 22-21
It took a late field goal, but the Redskins beat the Cardinals after dominating all the stat lines, and even losing a lead in the fourth quarter falling behind by 8.  But it was Rex Grossman still throwing the ball around and Tim Hightower running the ball to get the Redskins in position to win.  They are 2-0 and and the Bills are 2-0, but which team is more of a surprise and looks better??

Green Bay Packers beat Carolina Panthers 30-23
Would this be a coming out party for Cam Newton, not if the Packers would have any say in it.  Newton still threw for over 400 yards in only his second start.  But the Packers still showed off their a better team this year than last and won the game by getting 23 straight points after falling behind 13-0.  Newton seemed to earn the respect of the Packers, now it's time to start winning games.  The Packers just keep doing what they are doing, and show they could be primed for another Super Bowl run.

Dallas Cowboys beat San Francisco 49ers 27-24
It took an overtime session, but the Cowboys got the job done.  Tony Romo had a fractured  rib or two, and still came back to the game to lead the way.  He threw a 77 yard completion in OT and set up the game winning field goal.

Denver Broncos beat Cincinnati Bengals 24-22
Who exactly started for the Broncos in this game?  They had 10 guys who normally play injured, and a few starters lost before the game.  Kyle Orton still got the team to rally behind him, and get the win for coach John Fox.  Tim Tebow even get a taste of the action.....at wide receiver, not exactly the place where fans thought he would be at.  But he was on the scout team as a receiver, and got called up to play some receiver in yesterday's game.

Houston Texans beat Miami Dolphins 23-13
The Texans didn't even play that well, but it didn't matter as they beat the Dolphins.  Houston is 6-0 against Miami, looks like they have their number.  Andre Johnson had no problems with the reserve corner back guarding him.  He had 7 receptions for 93 yards and a td.  Not a shabby day for him.

New England Patriots beat San Diego Chargers 35-21
I thought this could be a statement game for the Chargers, and my super bowl pick, but they couldn't come up with enough plays to win the game.  The Pats defense made enough stops to win the game, and the Chargers couldn't get it together to beat the Pats.  Hey Tom Brady helped my fantasy team, so that's a good thing.  Even if I hate him.

Atlanta Falcons beat Philadelphia Eagles 35-31
Probably a bigger game for the Falcons to win, and get back on the winning side.  Matt Ryan threw for four touchdowns in a winning effort. Michael Vick wasn't around to see the end of the game as he took a big hit, and had to leave the game.

New York Giants beat St. Louis Rams 28-16
Didn't pay attention to this game as I was busy watching Monday Night Raw, but looks like the Rams had some issues with turnovers.  Eli Manning didn't exactly have a stellar game throwing, but his receivers made some great catches.  The Giants got a win, and head to face the Eagles next week. The Rams need to turn things around, so they can follow through on my prediction of winning the NFC West.

NFL Week 1 Reactions

Green Bay Packers beat New Orleans Saints 42-34
Great way to start the season with both teams out firing away.  The Packers had a great first quarter, and seemed to own the game most of the way.  Drew Brees got the passing yards going over 400 for the game in a losing effort.  Randall Cobb, a rookie out of Kentucky, stole the show with an 108 yard kickoff return, which ties the record for longest kickoff return.  Aaron Rodgers held his own with 300plus yards of passing and three touchdowns.  The Packers didn't show much of a letdown from last season, and possibly look better than last season.  The Saints should still have a great season as well, and be able to build off this game.

Chicago Bears beat Atlanta Falcons 30-12
Brian Urlacher showed that the defense can still be good up in Chicago.  He got an interception and returned a fumble for a touchdown.  Jay Cutler throw around the ball passing for 312 yards and 2 scores.  Michael Turner ran for 100 yards in the losing effort for the Falcons.  Matt Ryan didn't have any touchdowns, but was able to throw for 319 yards.  One game doesn't make the season, but I'm quite surprised the Bears handled the Falcons like they did.  Possibly a wake up call for the Falcons to step up in week 2, and the Bears want to show winning the division last years wasn't a fluke.

Cincinnati Bengals beat the Cleveland Browns 27-17
This one killed my shot at a survivor pool, where you pick one team you think will win for sure, and then you can't use that team again.  Well after one week, I'm out, so thanks a lot Cleveland.  In the battle for Ohio, the Bengals were able to put the Browns away.  I still think the Browns might be able to surprise some teams.  I don't know if the Bengals are really able to make much noise after this game.  Cedric Benson rushed for over 100 yards and got a touchdown late to help the Bengals put away this game.  Colt McCoy throw for 2 touchdowns and got over 300 yards, but couldn't lead his team down the field when they needed it.  Bigger story for the Bengals is Andy Dalton, their rookie quarterback, went out of the game, and didn't return.  We'll see if he ends up playing next week, says he should be good to go.

Buffalo Bills beat the Kansas City Chiefs 41-7
For me, this game was the upset of the day. You had the Chiefs, who won their division last year up against the Bills who were 4-12, and haven't had a winning season since 2004.  On paper, Chiefs looked to easily take this one.  But Ryan Fitzpatrick threw four touchdowns in leading the way.  Stevi Johnson caught one touchdown, and the Bills gave the Chiefs their most lopsided opening day loss.  One game might not mean anything if the Bills end up with another losing season, but for one week, they can feel great about their team.  The Chiefs will have to bounce back from this game if they want to repeat as division champs.

Philadelphia Eagles beat St. Louis Rams 31-13
The Eagles beat up on the Rams, literally.  Steven Jackson and Sam Bradford left the game with injuries.  Jackson will get looked at tomorrow and Bradford had negative x-rays on his right index finger.  Hopefully both guys will be good to go next week for the Rams to have a shot at winning and getting back on the right track.  The Eagles showed they want to be the class of the NFC with Michael Vick leading the way.  He threw for 187 yards and two touchdowns.  Lashawn McCoy ran for 122 yards and a score to lead the rushing attack.  The Rams couldn't get going after Bradford left the game, and AJ Feely was left throwing for a measly 21 yards on 6 attempts.  We'll see next week if the up and coming Rams team will show up.

Detroit Lions beat Tampa Bay Buccaneers 27-20
The Lions are the sexy pick to make some noise in the NFC, maybe not winning the division, but winning more games than they normally would.  They made some strides in the game against the Bucs.  Matthew Stafford showed off his throwing skills passing for over 300 yards and three touchdowns.  Calvin Johnson was a fine target for Stafford getting two touchdown passes and making six catches.  Jahvid Best led the rushing attack carving up 72 yards on 21 attempts.  The Detroit defense didn't make life easy for Josh Freeman of the Bucs by getting to him for a sack and intercepting him once.  Will Detroit be able to keep the momentum going of an undefeated preseason and now this win on the road in opening day?  Will the Bucs bounce back and get to double digit wins like last season?

Jacksonville Jaguars beat Tennessee Titans 16-14
I have a feeling next time these teams play, you might see different starting quarterbacks.  For now, Matt Hasselback lead the way for the Titans with over 200 yards of passing.  But he was pressured all day by the Jags defense, even getting to him on the first play of the game.  Maurice Jones- Drew rushed his way for the Jags to 97 yards and a score.  Luke McCown was the quarterback for the Jags, and finished up with 175 yards passing.  Not lighting up the stats sheet, and possibly looking to see when Blaine Gabbert takes over the job.  But the Jags got the win by making a big play on defense at the end of the game, and they can move on to week two with this win.  Titans need to shape up their team and make sure Chris Johnson can be the running back we all expect him to be, especially after his new contract.

Baltimore Ravens beat Pittsburgh Steelers 35-7
Another surprising game in that the Ravens literally beat down the Steelers.  Any signs of a Ravens defense getting old were put away with this game.  The defense forced seven turnovers, four fumbles and three interceptions.  Ray Rice ran over the Steelers going for 107 yards and a touchdown.  This was quite the way for the Ravens to show they could be the beasts of the AFC North, and possible AFC.  The Steelers seem to be an up and down team every other season, so this could be their down year, especially if they play like this.

Houston Texans beat Indianapolis Colts 34-7
The Texans must have treated this as their Super Bowl because they outplayed the Colts in every facet of the game.  Every running back in the game for the Texans was able to get some yards.  Matt Shaub was throwing around the ball like there were no Colts defenders around.  Even though he was intercepted twice and threw for only one score, but it still seemed like he was throwing the ball wherever he wanted.  The Colts just couldn't get started, and it was their doom.  With Manning out, this team can't get behind too far, so they have to step it up in week 2, and it couldn't come against a better team, the Browns.  Look for a better performance out of the Colts next week at home, and we'll see if the Texans can finally get over .500.

Arizona Cardinals beat Carolina Panthers 28-21
Was this Cam Newton's coming out party? He passed for over 400 yards and broke the record for rookie passing.  But it was all in a losing effort.  Is Kevin Kolb the quarterback for the Cardinals?  He did hold his own with 300plus yards of passing and two scores.  But more eyes were on Newton and what he was able to do.  But will he be able to continue to do it?  There are targets out there for Newton, but there's a target on him as well.

San Diego Chargers beat Minnesota Vikings 24-17
I thought this was a game that Donovan McNabb had to come out firing and showing he can still play, but he came up with 7 passes for 39 yards....that's it?  I thought he could end up with those numbers in a quarter.  But that was the whole game.  Adrian Peterson did run for 98 yards, which is a nice sign for him.  The Chargers came out and played well with Mike Tolbert leading the way catching two touchdowns and running in one.  Is this the season the Chargers come out for a fast start?  Will McNabb have a better performance next week?

San Francisco 49ers beat Seattle Seahawks 33-17
I'd almost call this the whole cares game. I don't even think the fans of these teams paid attention to this game.  Jim Harbaugh got his first coaching win.  Alex Smith went 15-20 for 124 yards, and one rushing score. Frank Gore ran for some yards.  Tavaris Jackson threw for a couple of touchdowns in a losing effort.  But overall, nothing too exciting to say about this game.

Washington Redskins beat New York Giants 28-14
Looks like Rex Grossman won the starting job for this week, but we'll see if he can keep a hold on it.  He went over 300 yards passing and two scores.  Not a bad day for him, and his third three hundred yard throwing day for the team.  Eli Manning didn't have a pleasant day as he was sacked four times by the Redskins defense.  But Eli does hold the active starting games streak thanks to his brother, Peyton, for being out of the Colts game.

New York Jets beat Dallas Cowboys 27-24
Being down two scores in the fourth quarter didn't faze the Jets.  Coming back to win the game in the late seconds.  Darrelle Revis did what he does best, and intercepted a pass by Tony Romo to get the Jets in great position to win the game.  Nick Folk booted a 50 yard field goal with 27 seconds to go, and the Jets move on with a win.

New England Patriots beat Miami Dolphins 38-24
Tom Brady throws for 517 yards and four touchdowns to help my fantasy team, I mean the Patriots win the game.  Nothing more to say about that.  Quite the performance.

Oakland Raiders beat Denver Broncos 23-20
A record came up in this game too with Sebastian Janikowski booting a 63 yard field goal to win the game for the Oakland Raiders.  Chants of Tebow filled the stadium at times as Kyle Orton didn't impress the Denver fans.  Don't think we'll be seeing Tebow anytime soon, but I could be wrong.  Final game of Monday night, and great way to finish the weekend with that long long field goal.

Colts take on the Texans

Thought it would be fun to do a running diary while watching the game, so here will be my thoughts and feelings about the game as we go.  I think it's important for the offensive line to step up and give Kerry Collins the time to throw the ball.  With the offensive weapons, the Colts have, there's no reason to feel that they won't be able to move the ball against the Texans. Also, with Kerry Collins behind center, maybe the running game could be something.  If the Colts could at least establish a little bit of running, it opens up that play action, so much more.  I know this isn't rocket science, but with Collins back there, they do have to make sure to sell the run more.  Defensively, this is the time to shine.  Freeney and Mathis should be able to get some licks on Matt Shaub.  The corners and safeties have to play up on those receivers, and don't give them those huge cushions that they sometimes give them.  Like I said with Manning out, it gives the rest of the Colts the chance to show off what they can do.  There's talent on this team, and I'm excited to see how they do against the Texans.

Here we go, let's see how the defense is going to hold up right now.  Quick pass to Andre Johnson, who was wide open.  Interception by Melvin Bullitt, maybe a sign of good things for the defense.

Collins will get to show off how he knows the Colts offense.  Good run there by Joseph Addai.  He wants to play well in front of the hometown crowd.  Collins goes down with a sack by Mario Williams.  Not the best series for the offense.  Looks like a punt for the Colts this time.  The defense has to feel good about that interception and see how well they hold up this next series for the Texans.

A good pass by Matt Shaub to move it down the field a bit.  A running play by Derrick Ward helps the offense keep moving slowly but surely down the field.  The defense is bending a bit here on this series by the Texans, but hopefully they pull it together and get a stop.  Andre Johnson has a good size advantage over the Colts corner backs.  Good tackle by Gary Brackett to get Ward for a loss, and a bad throw by Shaub sets up a third down, where the Colts have to make a stop.  Well there's the Colts bend but don't break philosophy, and they were able to hold their own on a 3rd and Goal attempt by the Texans.  Texans go for the field goal, and make it 3-0.  Not a horrible series, like I said, good job of the defense to hold the Texans to just a field goal after the were moving it like nothing against the Colts.  Next offensive series for the Colts, let's see Colllins make something happen on this one.

The O line let that one get away as Collins gets knocked around, and the ball comes loose.  Houston recovers, and they are right in the Colts territory.  Moving the ball, and looking to score.  Derrick Ward pushes the ball into the end zone with a great run, and the Texans are up 10-0.

Wow a missed connection between Jeff Saturday and Kerry Collins leads to a fumble.  So maybe this isn't looking too pretty right now.  And Collins is having his hand looked at on the sidelines, not a good thing at all.

Matt Shaub is passing well, and the receivers are way too open.  Ward with another good run.  And now Ben Tate with a run for a touchdown, and the Colts are down 17-0.  All righty, the Colts need a spark here, and what better way than to do something with the offense.

There we go, a great pass to Reggie Wayne for a first down to get something going.  The line has to give Collins that time, and Collins should be able to find someone to get the ball too.  Good run by Joseph Addai that comes back because of a face mask hold by the left guard of the Colts.

End of the first quarter.  Not exactly the start that Colts would want to be down 17-0, but it's only the first quarter, still football left to play, and things are looking good on this series.  Let's see what unfolds after the quarter break.

Delone Carter gets a little piece of the action with a short run.  Great grab by Dallas Clark, who I think would be a great target for Collins to throw to.  Punt by the Colts, but at least the special teams get the guy around the ten, and the defense is back on the field.

Wow Andre Johnson is just eating up the Colts.  He's already got five catches and pretty much for a first down every time.  He might end up with a career day or something here.  The Defense has to step up to those receivers.  Finally a good stop on the running of the Texans.  14 first downs for the Texans already.  Man that's not a great stat for the Colts defense.  And the Texans are in the red zone looking to score again.  I guess this might be the Texans day.  Touchdown for the Texans with a catch by Andre Johnson.  Texans up 24-0 on the Colts.

Bad throw by Collins and a loss of yards by Addai, and this offensive series is almost over before it starts.  Penalty of delay of game, and the Colts get pushed back even more.  Another incomplete pass, and this series is done.  The defense needs to make a play now, and spark the offense.

A penalty by the defense gives the Texans some yards.  Tate makes a small run to keep things moving.  And another first down run by Ben Tate.  The Houston Offensive line is just dominating the Colts defensive line.  Another stat brought up 10 plays of 10 plus plays.  Well good trip up by Houston on their own player, and the Colts get a stop in the backfield.  3rd and 5 for the Texans, a time for the Colts to make a stop.  Doesn't look like it matters what receiver is out there for the Texans, everyone is catching a ball.  Tip passes that need to be caught by the Colts defense.  Finally a sack on Shaub by Robert Mathis.  A small spark and ray of hope.  3rd and 13 now's the time for another stop.  At least make the Texans kick a field goal.  Get the stop, and making the Texans kick a field goal.  27-0 for the Texans now.

Nothing to say about that offensive series for the Colts, and the Texans still have a chance to move down the field.  Just end this half already!!

A punt return for a touchdown by the Texans and they are up 34-0 on the Colts. Don't know how to keep this going.  And FINALLLLLYYYYYY this half is over.  34-0 for the Texans, maybe we could raise a white flag now.

What to say about that first half?  The Texans did anything they wanted to do, and just outplayed the Colts in every sense.  Mentally, not sure where the Colts will be at coming out of halftime, but I know they'll come out and compete.  Collins just needs to get comfortable back there, and that O-line has to be stronger. I knew that would be an issue coming in.  Maybe the Colts can make some game out of this.  But it's not looking good at all.

Good pass by Collins to Pierre Garcon starting out the second half.  A run by Joseph Addai keeps it moving. Good screen pass to Dallas Clark, and things are looking promising for a scoring chance.  That series gets screwed up with a bad penalty, and the Colts can't get going again.  Another punt for the Colts, and hoping not for a run back.

Matt Shaub isn't even staying in the pocket making these passes.  The Colts defense gets a punt out of the Texans, and the offense will take the field.

Good strike by Collins to Reggie Wayne.  Just get something going to gel this team.  There's the typical false start call on the offensive line.  Seems to happen a few times a game for the Colts.  Well this drive comes down to a 3rd and 13 and there was no hope for that play at all.  Collins is running out of the pocket, and doesn't get the pass to the line of scrimmage, and it's fourth down.....again.

Now Steve Slaton is running the ball.  Texans have quite the bunch of running backs.  And Jacoby Jones makes a catch to get into Colts territory.  I'm starting to run out of steam to finish this, but hey just like a team has to finish the game,  I will keep it going...that's what she said?!?  I feel like the Texans have all kinds of guys out there who can make a play.  come on, colts step it up!  End of the third quarter.  Still another quarter to go, and wondering what the Colts need to do.

Tate is back running the ball, and picking up a few yards.  The defense is going to need some oxygen after this game.  Good hit on Shaub there with a ball up in the air, but the Colts can't get to it. There's a ray of sunshine, Brackett with the interception and a nice run to get some yards.  But Brackett is left on the sidelines as it gets cut to commercial.

The Colts are at midfield, and need to make a score here of ANY kind.  Just to give it something.  Good pass to Dallas Clark.  Colts pick up a first down, and get to the 40 yard line of the Texans.  Wow that was going to be quite the catch and throw if that was caught by Garcon.  Flag comes out, and something goes the Colts way.  Just missed pass by Collins to Garcon, and a missed field goal by Adam Vinateri.  Wow, so much for anything going right for the Colts.  As I type that, a fumble by the Texans, and Pat Angerer picks up the ball to give the Colts the ball in the red zone.  Maybe we'll get a score here????  Catch by Reggie Wayne for the first score of the Colts season.  At least it's not a shut out, and that was a marvelous catch by Wayne to put the feet down before falling out of bounds.

The defense is up again, and looking aggressive.  Angerer tries to rip the ball out of Tate's hands.  The defense plays well on this series, and force the Texans to punt.  Maybe the Colts offense can step up and score again.  Just keep giving something for the Colts to get momentum on.

Wayne with another good catch as he was running in stride.  He's picking up good yards.  Good throw to Dallas Clark, and the Colts are back in the red zone.  Austin Collie couldn't get in bounds to stay in for the score.  Here we go, going for it on fourth down.  Hey might as well go for it down 34-7.  But not a good throw by Collins, and it didn't seem like the Colts had the right play for that.

Texans ball now, and let's see if they are aggressive.  Tate runs again...and find a good hole.  Texans pick up a first down as the two minute warning hits.  Almost like a bell to end the fight round.  But not yet the end of the fight.  Anything to take from this game other than the Colts need to improve....everything?  Texans are kneeling the ball and putting this game to rest.  Both teams still have lots to prove.  The Texans showed a lot of promise last year in the first game by beating the Colts and ended up 6-10.

Let's see how the Colts bounce back from this one, got the Cleveland Browns coming to town for the first home game of the season.

Indianapolis Colts Preview by ESPN
I didn't want to state too much about as the next episode of "On the Sidelines" will be the NFL preview blowout. But ESPN has a preview for every team, and you can see what is the prediction for your favorite team.

Indianapolis Colts Hire Jim Tressel Replay Review Consultant
This is a hire that I just don't get. I understand the Colts need someone specifically for replays, but why Jim Tressel?  I just don't think it's right he can "resign" from one job, where he was facing stiff penalties, and end up getting a NFL position.  Wish I could be in that type of field, leave one job, and have another job just waiting for you.

Yao Ming asks Basketball Hall of Fame to Put Nomination on Hold
Very interesting story here.  While there's hardly any chance for Yao Ming to go into the Hall of Fame as a player, there's a chance he could be like an ambassador type for China. If that's the case, then I say go for it.  What he was able to do for China through the NBA is pretty awesome.  Also the fact that he was able to get the all star vote every year is saying something about how much he is revered in that country.
